A Dictator's Ambition

Pinochet's Chile

This article from the online Washington Post summarizes the rule of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet from 1973 to 1990. Pinochet started off his political career as a military leader. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the head of the Chilean military. He used his power to stage a coup and overthrow the current president of Chile, Salvador Allende, who was openly Marxist and elected democratically. In 1973, Pinochet's forces, with the help of the United States's Central Intelligence Agency, easily gained total control of the country and Pinochet declared himself President of Chile shortly thereafter. His new regime ruled through fear. Any Chilean citizens who opposed the regime "disappeared" or were killed. While the economy improved under his rule, he heavily disregarded freedom of speech and even disbanded many left-wing political parties. Eventually, he returned the country to a democracy (but not without a fight to keep some of his power) and he was replaced by a democratically elected President in 1990.
This article was very interesting to read. First of all, I had never heard of the coup d'etat waged against the Chilean government, and certainly not of Augusto Pinochet, despite the events of this article taking place just before my time. It wasn't hard to pick up the fact that Pinochet was an ambitious and greedy dictator, and that he was a good example of how someone with ambition can go too far. His use of fear, smothering of protests, and killing of anyone against his government made it clear that he was willing and able to do anything to stay in power. I was surprised that I had not heard of such a ruthless, authoritative ruler. It is sad to think that there were people like this throughout history who used violence and extreme oppression to help themselves, and that their strong desire for power was not constrained by morals. I encourage anyone who is unfamiliar with Pinochet's military rule of Chile to read this article.

A Less-Than-Tragic Backstory

To whom it may concern,
My name is Jack Lathrop and I am one of the many sophomores fortunate enough to attend Creighton Preparatory School in Omaha, Nebraska, and a proud graduate of the St. Robert Bellarmine grade school. I play the trumpet in the Prep band. Since joining the band, I have been in several honor bands, including the 2014 Wesleyan Honor Band, which performed this past weekend. Playing the trumpet requires a lot of work, but the fun I have when I play makes it worth the effort. I am not a huge athlete, but I do run cross country in the fall, and play soccer for Prep in the spring. I've been playing soccer since I was eight years old. I hopefully will make the sophomore team this year. In my free time, I like to listen to music. I listen to a lot of different bands, Coldplay, Fall Out Boy, No Doubt, and The Killers to name a few. If I'm not listening to music, I'm probably watching Netflix on my iPad. I usually watch horror movies; there's nothing like the rush of adrenaline you feel when watching a suspenseful chase scene or jumping out of your skin when something pops out of the shadows at you. The name of my blog is even from The Shining, one of the greatest horror movies of all time. I also like watching TV shows, such as Criminal Minds, Doctor Who, and Sherlock. On the weekends, my favorite pastime is hanging out with friends. Most of my friends are people I went to grade school with, but I've made some of my closest friends at Prep. We always have a lot of fun when we're all together. My friends say that I'm funny. I do like to joke around, but sometimes I accidentally say something that gets me in trouble. People who don't know me that well probably think I'm weird and loud, and honestly, I completely agree. At least I'm memorable. Anyone who avoids me because of my personality is missing out on the spectacular person that I try to be. I hope this small biography was worth your time and that you learned something new about me. Follow my blog for many more of my insightful posts and pointless ramblings.
Sincerely,
The one
The only
Jack Lathrop
